What Is a Unit Converter?
A unit converter is a tool that converts a measurement from one unit to another — for example, meters to feet, kilograms to pounds, or Celsius to Fahrenheit. It's essential for:
- International work — bridging metric and imperial systems
- Science and engineering — ensuring consistent units in calculations
- Cooking and baking — converting between cups, grams, and milliliters
- Travel — understanding temperatures, distances, and speeds abroad
- Fitness — tracking weight in kilograms or pounds
- Construction — converting between imperial and metric building measurements
How to Use This Converter
- Pick a category — length, weight, volume, temperature, area, speed, time, data, pressure, energy, angle, or fuel.
- Enter a value — the "From" field is where you type.
- Choose your units — pick the "From" and "To" units from the dropdowns.
- Read the result instantly — the "To" field updates as you type.
- Swap with one click — use the ⇅ button or the "Swap Units" button.
The 12 Categories
- Length — meters, feet, inches, miles, kilometers, yards, and more
- Weight — kilograms, pounds, ounces, grams, tons, stones
- Volume — liters, gallons, milliliters, cups, pints, quarts, fluid ounces
- Temperature — Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin
- Area — square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square miles
- Speed — km/h, mph, m/s, knots, feet per second
- Time — seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years
- Data — bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, and binary equivalents (KiB, MiB, etc.)
- Pressure — pascals, bar, PSI, atmospheres, torr
- Energy — joules, calories, kilocalories, watt-hours, BTU
- Angle — degrees, radians, gradians, turns
- Fuel economy — MPG (US/UK), L/100km, km/L
How Conversion Works
Most units convert via a simple multiplication factor:
1 meter = 3.28084 feet
1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds
1 liter = 0.264172 US gallons
The tool stores a base-unit conversion factor for each unit. To convert from unit A to unit B:
Result = (Value in A) × (Factor of A) / (Factor of B)
Temperature is the exception — Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin require formulas rather than simple multiplication, because their zero points differ.
Metric vs Imperial
- Metric system — based on powers of 10. Used almost everywhere except the US. Meters, grams, liters.
- Imperial / US customary system — based on historical units. Feet, pounds, gallons. Still common in the US, UK (partially), and a few other countries.
- Key conversions — 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 mile = 1.609 km; 1 kg = 2.205 lb; 1 liter = 0.264 US gallons.
Common Conversion Challenges
- US vs UK gallons — a US gallon is 3.785 L; a UK gallon is 4.546 L. Same name, different sizes.
- Ounces (weight vs fluid) — a fluid ounce measures volume; an ounce measures weight. They're not interchangeable.
- Tons — a US short ton is 2,000 lb; a UK long ton is 2,240 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,205 lb).
- Bytes vs bits — 1 byte = 8 bits. Network speeds use bits (Mbps); storage uses bytes (MB).
- Temperature offsets — 0°C = 32°F = 273.15 K. Only Kelvin has an absolute zero.
Common Use Cases
- Construction — convert building plans between metric and imperial.
- Science — convert experimental data into SI units.
- Cooking — convert recipes between cups, grams, and ounces.
- Travel — understand distances, temperatures, and speeds abroad.
- Fitness — track weight in kilograms or pounds.
- Computing — convert between file size units and storage capacities.
- Weather — convert forecast temperatures between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
- Fuel efficiency — compare car fuel economy across MPG and L/100km.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How accurate are the conversions? — Standard conversion factors with high precision. Rounding is applied only for display.
- Can I convert negative temperatures? — Yes. Temperature handles negative values correctly.
- Are there British and American volume differences? — Yes. This tool distinguishes US and UK gallons, pints, and fluid ounces.
- What about historical units? — Ancient units like cubits and furlongs are not included — the tool focuses on modern units.
- Can I use keyboard shortcuts? — Yes. Enter in either input triggers a "swap" alignment.
