How PDF Encryption Works
PDFs can be protected by two kinds of passwords, and understanding the difference is essential to knowing what this tool can do:
- User password (open password) β Required to open the PDF at all. Without it, you can't view the file. This is strong encryption β AES-128 or AES-256 typically.
- Owner password (permissions password) β Not required to open the file, but used to set restrictions on printing, copying, editing, and extracting. The PDF opens normally, but the viewer honors these restrictions.
What This Tool Can Do
The Unlock mode focuses on owner-password restrictions. When a PDF only has an owner password (and no user password), the encryption key can often be derived without knowing the password. This tool uses that technique to produce an unrestricted copy.
- Remove print restrictions
- Remove copy/paste restrictions
- Remove editing restrictions
- Remove annotation restrictions
- Remove form field restrictions
What This Tool Cannot Do
- User password cracking β If the PDF asks for a password just to open, this tool cannot help. That would require the actual password.
- Bypass AES-256 encryption β Strong encryption used by modern PDFs is not bypassable without the password.
- Add new passwords β This tool cannot encrypt PDFs. It only removes certain restrictions. Adding a password would need a different tool or library.

How to Use This Tool
- Upload a PDF β drag and drop, or click to browse.
- Check the status β the file info shows whether it's locked, unlocked, or unknown.
- Click "Unlock PDF" β if restrictions can be removed, the cleaned file downloads automatically.
- Or click "Check Status" β inspect the PDF's encryption details without changing it.
Understanding the Status Badge
- π Unlocked β the PDF has no owner restrictions. Nothing to remove.
- π Locked (owner) β the PDF has owner restrictions. Unlock mode will attempt to remove them.
- π Locked (user) β the PDF requires a password to open. This tool cannot help.
- β Unknown β the tool couldn't determine the encryption state (usually a malformed or non-standard PDF).
Is This Legal?
Removing restrictions from a PDF you own is legal. You're entitled to modify your own documents.
Removing restrictions from a PDF you don't own may be illegal depending on your jurisdiction and the license terms. Common restrictions on PDFs include:
- Documents you've purchased but not licensed to modify
- Copyrighted material with anti-copy protections
- Corporate documents with internal security policies
- Contracts or forms with legal significance
Only use this tool on PDFs you own or have permission to modify.
When to Use a Desktop Tool Instead
- Password-protected files β you need the password. No tool can bypass user passwords without it.
- Encrypted archives with signatures β digital signatures may be invalidated by modification.
- Certification-signed PDFs β certified PDFs use a special signing scheme that detects modification.
- Corporate DRM-managed files β enterprise DRM is not the same as PDF encryption, and requires the DRM system to authorize access.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why didn't my PDF unlock? β Most likely it has a user password (asks for password to open). This tool cannot bypass user passwords. Or the encryption uses AES-256, which is not bypassable.
- Is my PDF uploaded? β No. Everything runs in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.
- Can I add a password with this tool? β No. Adding passwords requires encryption support, which pdf-lib doesn't provide.
- Will the unlocked PDF look different? β No. Only the encryption dictionary is removed. All pages, text, and images are preserved exactly.
