Splitting...

What Is PDF Splitting?

PDF splitting takes a single PDF and separates its pages into multiple smaller PDF files. It's the opposite of merging. You might want to split a PDF to:

  • Extract a single chapter from a large report
  • Save each invoice as a separate file
  • Distribute only part of a document
  • Reduce file size by keeping only the pages you need
  • Extract specific pages to share with colleagues

How to Use This Tool

  • Upload a PDF β€” drag and drop, or click to browse.
  • Choose a split mode β€” Range, Count, Individual, or Extract.
  • Configure the mode β€” set page ranges, count per file, or pages to extract.
  • Set the output prefix β€” determines the filename pattern.
  • Click "Split PDF" β€” a ZIP file downloads with all the split PDFs.

Split Modes Explained

  • Split by Range β€” define custom page ranges (e.g., pages 1–5 as one file, 6–10 as another). Each range becomes its own PDF.
  • Split by Count β€” pick a fixed number of pages (like 10), and the tool creates a new PDF for every 10 pages.
  • Individual Pages β€” every page becomes its own single-page PDF. Great for extracting all pages as separate files.
  • Extract Pages β€” pull specific pages into a single PDF. Say you want pages 1, 3, 5–8, and 12 as one file β€” just list them.

Page Number Syntax

In Range and Extract modes, you can use this syntax:

  • Single page β€” 5 (just page 5)
  • Range β€” 5-10 (pages 5 through 10)
  • Open range β€” 5- (pages 5 to the end) or -10 (pages 1 to 10)
  • Combination β€” 1, 3, 5-8, 12 (multiple selections)

Output Filenames

The output files are named with the prefix you provide followed by a number:

  • Prefix split β†’ split-1.pdf, split-2.pdf, etc.
  • Prefix chapter β†’ chapter-1.pdf, chapter-2.pdf, etc.
  • Prefix invoice β†’ invoice-1.pdf, invoice-2.pdf, etc.

ZIP Download

All output PDFs are bundled into a single ZIP file. This is cleaner than downloading individual files, especially when splitting a large PDF into dozens of pieces. You get:

  • One download click instead of many
  • All files organized in one archive
  • Easy extraction with any ZIP tool

Common Use Cases

  • Chapter extraction β€” pull chapter 3 out of a 200-page ebook.
  • Invoice processing β€” split a combined invoice PDF into individual files for accounting.
  • Form distribution β€” send only the relevant pages to each department.
  • Batch printing β€” split by count to fit printer page limits.
  • Content review β€” extract specific pages to share with reviewers.
  • Digital filing β€” split scanned documents by category.
  • Study materials β€” separate chapters or sections of a textbook.

What Gets Preserved

  • Page content β€” all text, images, and vectors are copied exactly.
  • Page size and orientation β€” each output page keeps its original dimensions.
  • Internal links β€” links within the split pages still work.
  • Fonts and graphics β€” embedded fonts and drawings are kept intact.
  • Annotations β€” comments, highlights, and form fields are preserved.

Privacy Note

Everything runs in your browser using pdf-lib (for PDF manipulation) and JSZip (for bundling outputs). Your PDF never leaves your device, and the split files are generated entirely in memory until you download the ZIP.
