Worked Example
You're building a simple workbench top that needs six boards, each 1¼" thick (5/4), 8" wide, and 6 feet long.
Workbench Top — Six Boards 5/4 × 8" × 6 ft
- Board feet per piece: (1.25 × 8 × 6) ÷ 12 = 5 board feet
- Total for six pieces: 5 × 6 = 30 board feet
- Add 15% waste for cutting and defects: 30 × 1.15 = 34.5 board feet
- Round up to a practical order quantity (most yards sell in whole or half board-foot increments): order about 35 board feet.

How Much Lumber Do You Actually Need?
- List every part of the project with its finished thickness, width, and length.

Add tax, delivery fees, and any minimum order charges. Softwood sold by the piece can be converted to board feet for apples-to-apples comparison with hardwood priced by the board foot.

Softwood Grading (Dimensional Lumber)

Surface measure (SM) is used to calculate the required clear-cutting yield. Thickness is expressed in quarters (4/4 ≈ 1" rough, 5/4 ≈ 1¼", 8/4 ≈ 2", etc.). There are species-specific exceptions and additional appearance or special grades (e.g., for walnut, alder, etc.).

- Softwood board-foot calculations and pricing almost always use nominal sizes (the labeled 2×4, 2×6, etc.), even though actual dressed sizes are smaller.
- Hardwood board-foot calculations typically use the rough/nominal thickness (or actual surface measure per NHLA rules). Higher grades (FAS, Selects) give better clear yield, so you may need less total volume (or a lower waste factor) than with No. 1 or No. 2 Common.
- Grade affects usable yield. When estimating waste for a project, higher-grade lumber generally allows a lower waste percentage; lower grades need more allowance for defects and cutting around knots.
